The Data I gathered from home.. The appliances and power used in each room over 24hrs
After collecting personal data, as a group we designed a way of visualizing the data. We had to find common readings, eg if someone had collected info about the nuber of windows, drafts etc and no one else had then the data wouldnt be compareable.
We decided to use a 24hr clock and map the on and off time for each appliance for each person. By doing this we were able to immediately see that energy consumed by tv was vast and mostly in the evening. Out of the four groups, this map has the most visible data.
Using the data collected, we split into groups and created energy maps....
This visual map showed the standby energy used as well as the amount of enery for each appliance.
After we created our dataflow maps we swapped with another group. We had to interact with what was already made and add our data.
How can the audience use the work done so far to completely enable participation?
Is it completely redesigned?
How do you use this info to create meaning?
What are the possible interpretations?
This group decided to show personal energy consumption instead of aplliance consumption. Each colour thread represents an individual. They too used the 24hr clock. This data map looks visually appealing due to the clean lines and graphic simplicity.
This data map was the most visually exciting. Each individual had a piece of thread and the wound it around the pegs based on their personal energy consumption for that appliance. As the threads grew, a rainbow effect became visible. Immediately showing who consumed the most energy by the depth of the band of colour.
We were the audience for this data map, so we had to interpret it and interact by adding our data. It was really quite clear as to how the visualisation was designed to show data, however we did find that as they're was no key, it wasn't clear how each unit of energy was displayed. Some of our appliances weren't included so we added the telephone.
